    Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in my first counselling session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what has brought you to counselling, your goals, and any concerns you may have. There’s no pressure to share more than you feel comfortable with.

    How long are counselling sessions?

Sessions usually run for 50–60 minutes. This gives us enough time to explore issues in depth while making sure you don’t feel rushed.

Do you offer after hours appointments?

After-hours appointments may be available on a limited and discretionary basis. If you require an after-hours appointment, please contact me.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone’s needs are different. Some people find a few sessions helpful, while others prefer ongoing support. We’ll discuss your goals together and review progress along the way.

Can I bring my baby or child along to my session?

Face-to-face sessions at Healing Hooves Inc are held within the beautiful Country Paradise Parklands.

Please note, there is no secure waiting area or child-minding service available. The parklands offers many facilities including a playground and open spaces that can be enjoyed under adult supervision.

As some counselling conversations may be sensitive or unsuitable for children, I require that—unless your child is part of the session or prior arrangements have been made — you organise for them to be safely cared for during your session. This helps ensure your child’s wellbeing and gives you the opportunity to focus fully on your own self-care without distraction.

    Is Healing Hooves Inc accessible?

Yes. Healing Hooves Inc is fully accessible with no stairs and wide driveway like access. The space has shade and a fan (please note there is no air conditioning). Accessible toilets are available close by within the Country Paradise Parklands. Horses are at the fence, chickens and other birds also visit the area as well as occasionally my medium size dog who will only be released from his crate with consultation and agreement.

Do you offer online or phone counselling?

Yes. If you prefer the comfort of your own home, I provide secure online video and phone sessions. These are flexible options for those with busy schedules, travel limitations, or who feel most at ease in their own space.

    Is counselling confidential?

Yes. What you share in counselling remains private, with a few legal exceptions (such as risk of harm to yourself or others, or when required by law). We’ll talk about confidentiality in more detail in your first session.

What issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can support you with a wide range of concerns, including stress, anxiety, relationships, self-esteem, life transitions, making decisions and more.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No, you don’t need a referral. You can book directly with me at any time.

Can I use a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)?

No, I am not able to accept Mental Health Care Plans. However, I aim to provide a service that is flexible and affordable without the need for a GP referral or the reporting involved and you are not limited to a maximum of 10 sessions per year.

Affordable Fees – My session fees are generally lower than the out-of-pocket cost of seeing a psychologist under an MHCP.

All private practitioners set their own fees. As a guide, The Australian Psychological Society National Schedule of Suggested Fees 2025-2026 has the standard 46 to 60-minute consultation fee at $318, less Medicare rebate of $145.25 for a clinical psychologist, less for non-clinical = $172.75 out of pocket).

With counselling, you have greater choice, flexibility, and continuity of care—without the barriers of referrals, paperwork, or limited sessions.

How is counselling different from psychology?

Counsellors and psychologists both provide mental health support, but their training and focus can differ. Counsellors often emphasise practical support (through life changes, problems or crisis), emotional wellbeing, and personal growth. Psychologists may specialise in diagnosis and more structured clinical intervention addressing a specific mental health issue.
